Again With The Chocolate Lasagna?

All right, Olive Garden. What is the deal with taking Chocolate Lasagna off of the menu again?

I thought we already figured this whole thing out about a year ago, when you first decided to remove the best dessert ever made (by an Italian-themed chain restaurant) from your list of offerings. I contacted you through the website. I called the 800 number. I wrote petition chain letter emails.

Chocolate Lasagna came back.

For a limited time, I guess.

During my latest visit to your restaurant, I asked if you still had the Chocolate Lasagna as soon as we sat down. Ever since the first time it disappeared, I feel that I must ask about its status upon arrival, as I am suspicious of your continuous "updates" to the dessert menu. And rightfully so. When the server told me that it wasn't available, I thought it was some kind of cruel joke. Again with the Chocolate Lasagna? You can't be serious.

She was not kidding. And to tell you the truth, I don't think she could believe it either.

I almost got right up and walked out when I heard the news. I don't have to subject myself to that kind of ridiculousness. And I would have, too. But I was with my wife. And I was hungry. And we had a gift card.

Next time, Olive Garden, you won't be so lucky.

Chocolate Lasagna is the whole reason that I visit your establishment. Do you think I come in just so I can pay $9.50 for some spaghetti? Why would any restaurant decide to take the best thing on their menu off of it?

I'm not impressed with its replacement, either. Chocolate gelato? It's just ice cream, people. Topped with some chocolate chunks that should instead be on a piece of Chocolate Lasagna. Nice try.

They've pushed me to my limit again. I'm boycotting the Olive Garden until Chocolate Lasagna is reinstated. Please join me.

Or at least sign my petition chain letter email. And send it to 10 of your friends.

The people running the Olive Garden must not even be Italian. I mean when I think of Italian pastries I think; canolli, then I think of lady locks, then I think of CHOCOLATE LASAGNA. I'm joining the boycot.
Since Kennywood took Garfield, maybe we could steal his long lost italian cousin as our spokesperson.

I was going to order an appetizer and 3 pieces of there chocolate lasagna but when she told me that they did not carry it anymore and named the rest of the desserts off I cancelled the whole order and went to another restaurant. Why do they always get rid of the best and keep the worst.$$$.

I wrote Olive Garden a note the other day. 15 years of going to the place. No more. The chocolate lasagna was the only reason to tolerate their exhorbitant prices anymore.

I can't believe it. I thought my sisters and I were the only ones devastated by the removal of the Chocolate Lasagna from Olive Garden's menu. It's my sisters birthday tomorrow and she really wanted the chocolate lasagna for her birthday cake. In effort to make her day I am attempting a copy cat recipe, but I know it won't be the same. Needless to say we won't be celebrating her b-day at Olive Garden this year, there's no reason to at this point.

Forget Olive Garden then and find the source. They didn't make the cake themselves, they order it from someone else. Someone HAS to be able to find it without Olive Garden as the middle man!

I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! That is exactly what I told our waitress when she told me that they didn't have it any more. THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON I COME HERE!!! I know have to THINK about where I want to go for dinner...ugh, it used to be simple, salad and breadsticks followed by a chocolate lasagna...now I don't just automatically want to go to the Olive Garden anymore. And yeah, Chocolate Gelato? That's a load of crap...it IS just ice cream!! I have tried to make it, but it just isn't the same, the cake is too thick, the icing isn't the same, plus it takes a ton of incredients and hours and hours of time waiting for the cakes to cook and then cool...so much easier to go to the Olive Garden to get it. In agreement with Erica, if you can find the source, please post it!!!

How could Olive Garden do this to it's loyal Chocolate Lasagna fans? When my friend told me she recently visited Olive Garden and was told that it had been removed from the menu, I almost cried. We have to brin it back. Where is the petition letter so that we can add our names?

I was heartbroken when I found it was off the menu. I did go to a website called www.cdkitchen.com it has copycat restaurant recipes. I'm going to try to make it for Christmas. Wish me luck!!

I live in Alaska and when I visit the lower 48 I always look forwad to my visit at Olive Garden. This time I took my husband for the first time and I was so excited that I was going to have him finally tast the chocolate lasagna that I talked so much about. By the way I don't like chocolate but I liked this dessert. Boy was I disappointed when at the end of the meal it was not avaible. We didn't have dessert we left.

i am joining the boycott also. my husband suffered a massive stroke in august. he finally can chew and swallow and asked me for chocolate lasagna. when i went to the olive garden in eatontown, nj, i was told that they removed the dessert AND the sausage and peppers rustica which was the only reason that we ate there. i will not be going back again.

Anonymous said...

You said it man. My fiance and I loved that stuff. It was our cheat meal for years, as I am a personal trainer and she a fitness nut :) We are both extremely upset with the decision to remove our favorite meal ever. We ate there the other day, since we recieved a gift card over the holidays, and decided to skip the dessert. We found out about the removal months ago and haven't stepped foot in an Olive Garden until last week, and as I said it was only because we had a gift card. I found a copy cat recipe online, but seems like too much work when I used to be able to PURCHASE IT FROM OLIVE GARDEN! Until the return of CHOCOLATE LASAGNA I refuse to vist them again!

OMG! I just found out too and was devastated! I only went there for the chocolate lasagna! Nothing can replace it. No more Olive Garden until the only real dessert is reinstated!

I will NOT go back to Olive Garden unless, and until the Chocolate Lasagna is brought back!

I too miss the Chocolate Lasagne. I called Olive Garden and they gave me MBM Distribution phone number to call them to get the name of the Bakery they used to order it from. Their number is 1-800-817-6919. I have tried calling but have not gotten thru yet. If anyone else gets thru post your results here for everyone else to see, and I will do the same. Good Luck!

If you want to have the best chocolate lasagna ever, go to La Madia Restaurant in Brazil. It is located in Ribeirao Preto, State of Sao Paulo. There is nothing like it.

Anonymous said...

I call that my birthday cake. :(

Anonymous said...

has anyone found the name of the bakery where they bought it from? I normally will not touch anything chocolate but the chocolate lasagna was my absolute favorite dessert I always ordered 3 pieces one to have as dessert then two for during the week. Sigh =(

Anonymous said...

HAS ANYONE FOUND OUT WHERE MBM DISTRIBUTION GETS THE LASAGNA CAKE?

Anonymous said...

i miss it too. chocolate lasagna was sooooo good and now its gone :(

I would sign this 100 times if I could! I never eat dessert anywhere but when I went to the Olive Garden I odered the chocolate Lasagna full or not. So happened to be I was there the last day they were serving it and told our server how disappointed I was that they removed it off the menu. Are you really going to send this to HQ? I hope so....

Despite the removal of chocolate lasagna from the menu, I still go from time to time for lunch – soup salad and breadsticks with no desert afterwards. On the sparse occasions when I do go there for dinner, it is always the veal parmesan – one of the few Italian dishes I can’t quite get right in my own kitchen – no desert afterwards, of course.

If you haven’t figured out where this is going yet… they removed the veal parmesan from the menu now, too!!! Looks like from now on I'll only be going there for cheap lunches. There are a ton of great Italian restaurants here in Syracuse that do everything else better.

Olive Garden Chocolate Lasagna
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the cake:

Vegetable shortening
1 box (2-layer size) dark chocolate or chocolate fudge cake mix (not too moist)
1 1/4 cups water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons cherry extract
Buttercream Frosting:

1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, softened
4 cups confectioners' sugar, divided
1/4 cup whole milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Filling:

4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chilled
To make the cake: Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13- by 9-inch baking pan with vegetable shortening

In a large bowl, combine the dry cake mix, water, oil, eggs and cherry extract. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake according to the instructions on the cake mix package for the 13- by 9-inch pan. Remove from the oven when done and let cool in the pan on a wire rack.

When the cake is cool, prepare the Buttercream Frosting. Whip the soft butter in a large bowl, using an electric mixer on high speed. Add 2 cups confectioners' sugar; mix well, then add the remaining confectioners' sugar. Add the milk and vanilla, then mix on high speed for 2 minutes, or until the frosting is smooth and creamy.

Turn the cake out of the pan onto wax paper. Using both hands, carefully flip the cake over, so that it's right side up, onto another strip of wax paper.

Now you are going to cut through the cake twice, creating 3 layers. We'll start at the bottom slice. First, slide the cake over to the edge of the kitchen counter. This way you can drop your hand with the knife down below the counter at the edge to get a nice, straight cut through the cake.

Using a long bread knife or other long serrated knife, cut through the bottom third of the cake. Spin the cake and wax paper so that you can cut through all sides -- your knife probably won't get all the way through to the other side. When the cake is sliced, carefully flip the top section over onto the other sheet of wax paper.

Frost the bottom layer of cake with about 1/3 of the buttercream frosting. Break the chilled semisweet chocolate into little bits that are a tad smaller than chocolate chips. A good way to do this is to put the chilled chocolate into a large zipper-top bag, then use the handle of a butter knife to smash the chocolate into pieces. Sprinkle about 1/3 of the chocolate bits over the frosting on the bottom layer.

Turn the top section back over onto the bottom layer. Again, slice through the top section, creating the final 2 layers. Carefully flip the top over onto the wax paper, and frost the new layer as you did with the first layer, adding chocolate bits as well. You might, at this point, wish to slice the top into thirds across the width of the cake. This makes flipping over the top layer much easier. It's also how you are going to slice the cake later, so you'll never see the cuts. Any cracks or breaks are no big deal because you'll just cover up the goofs with frosting.

Carefully reassemble the top section on the rest of the cake. If you have a large bulge in the center of the cake, you might want to slice that off so that the cake is flatter on top. Throw that slice away. Frost the top of the cake with the remaining frosting, then sprinkle on the remaining chocolate bits.

The cake is served in triangular slices. Slice by first cutting through the middle of the cake lengthwise. Next, cut across the cake through the middle twice (widthwise). Now you have 6 slices that just need to be cut from corner to corner one time each, creating 12 triangular slices. Chill leftovers.

Makes 12 servings.

I keep writing to O.G.'s headquarters asking them, begging them, pleading with them....

And I'm in my 30's....

My husband is in Iraq, yet again. I got a babysitter for my young kids today and went to Olive Garden with a friend to have my favorite; Chocolate Lasagna. Much needed comfort food. Guess what I found out when I got there?
Thanks Olive Garden!

I love Olive Garden and have been there numerous times, but this last time my bf has been bragging about how is is going to take me there and order chocolate lasagna because it is the best thing in the world. Well we got there and NO CHOCOLATE LASAGNA. We were both so upset!!!!! Now I have to find the recipe and try making it for myself. They NEED to bring it back.

Anonymous said...

My family and I have also boycotted because of the removal of choclate lasagna from OG menu....what is the point of going there now? There is none.
Very sad in New Hampshire

We are boycotting too. The recipe above is pretty close, but the real Chocolate Lasagna recipe calls for almond extract not vanilla.

Anonymous said...

The sole reason I go to Olive Garden is to get Zuppa Toscana, Raspberry Lemonade, and CHOCOLATE LASAGNA. I mean without fail these are the 3 things I always get. I went there on Thursday and was so shocked when it came time for me to order dessert and the waitress tells me the bad news. None of their other desserts can even compare...BRING IT BACK!!!

Anonymous said...

I nearly commited suicide when I found this out..literally.

Chocolate lasagna had been my addiction for atleast 5 years until I had an intervention with my family.

I've been clean for atleast a full year and then I found this out...I was horrified.

Now the only thing to eat at Olive Garden is their alfredo and salad.

Anonymous said...

i cant believe they got rid of it either. i was so upset. me and my friend made it over the summer but it didnt tast nearly as good. i would just stop by and pick up a slice of cake! I WANT IT BACK!!!!

BRING IT BACK

What are they thinking? I can't even be bothered with their other desserts!

Anonymous said...

I agree with you all. The only reason I go to Olive Garden is for the choclolate lasagna. Today when I found out it was off the menu I was heart broken. I too will boycott until they bring back this unique and delicious dessert.

Anonymous said...

alas, i too am forlorn at the removal of the chocolate lasagna. i pleaded and complained and all i got was a gift card with a note "come find your new favorite dessert!" no no no! my favorite dessert is in dessert heaven, and bring it back!!! raise the price if you want i'll pay it, just put it back on the menu!

Anonymous said...

Amen. I agree with this entirely. I decided to see if I could find copycat recipes for it this morning, or at least other people who feel as I do, and I'm glad I came across this. Olive Garden isn't worth it without the chocolate lasgna! How DARE they! I nearly left the restaurant myself when I found out, but we'd just been waiting 30 minutes for a table, and I was with my mother on a Friday night.

It's so nice to see I'm not the only one who feels that Olive Garden's chocolate lasagna deserves a place on their menu. I didn't know that they'd had it before and removed it a second time; are they all idiots? It was their best dessert, and not a single other one could compare. They really like removing money makers from their lists, huh?

Forgive the rant, but I haven't fully been able to get this off my chest for months now. It's... nice to be able to share this with those that are as perturbed about it as I am.

Bring it back, Olive Garden, or I will complain EVERY time I'm forced back there without it! (And I will make periodic check-ups, too. You've been warned, Olive Garden.)

Keeping an eye on this page for new updates,
Liz

not sure what good it will do.

I seriously was a fanatic about this dessert. The only person I know who would actually go in there on my lunch break just to order a piece of cake.

My boyfriend for my birthday last year drove out of his way to an Olive Garden just to get me two pieces for my birthday. That was the same day he told me they were discontinuing it. Happy Birthday.... *sigh*

Anonymous said...

Im pretty confused about Olive Garden removing this dessert. I have been told several times at Olive Garden by different servers that Chocolate Lasagna was one of their most popular desserts EVER. I certainly can believe this is true. So, whose bird brain idea was this?

Anonymous said...

I have been told by Olive Garden servers multiple times that Chocolate Lasagna is one of their most popular desserts. So, why would they possible remove it?

OG is updating their menu soon, wonder if our beloved chocolate lasagna will be on the list? I sure hope so, otherwise release they should name of the distrubtor so people can order for themselves. Dials phone. Rings. "Yes, one chocolate lasagna cake please" I would glady pay for shipping.

I worked for Olive Garden between 2000 and 2003. They always had chocolate lasagna, I would always take one home. It was my favorite.
2 weeks ago I decided to take my wife and my daughter to olive garden. When it was time for dessert I was very excited to order the chocolate lasagna just ti find out that the waitress never even had heard of the chocolate lasagna. Total disappointment, I didn't even felt like paying my bill. I will not be going to Olive Garden again

Anonymous said...

i cant believe it either. I have always disliked olive garden food. I would go to one AFTER eating at another restaurant just to get a slice of cake. I cried one day when my fiance ate my last piece of heaven. I thought i was the only one missing it. Keep hope alive.

Anonymous said...

I am TOTALLY p*@$%d off about it too! The only reason I would go to Olive Garden is to eat the chocolate lasagna. I was on a diet for like 9 months and as soon as i got off it, my reward was to eat a piece of that cake.. but NOO.. they had to eradicate the best dessert on earth... What is wrong with this companY!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I am like everyone else here...I go to Olive Garden just FOR the chocolate lasagna. Nothing else there is outstanding, in my opinion. Anyway, I asked about chocolate lasagna at OUR Olive Garden, and the bad news I was told is that Olive Garden doesn't even MAKE the dessert. The bakery/company that did, has discontinued it and so that's what happened. The O.G. waitress I had seemed to convey that the restaurant is VERY aware of it's popularity and very disappointed not to be able to offer it any longer.

I am a college freshman and serve at another restaurant (Houlihan's). All semester I would get superfluously home sick during my shifts; having to walk around the restaurant seeing all these happy families, chatting and spending time together over food. Finally the day came where I would see my family again and we would go out to eat (early December). They wanted Red Lobster, but I wanted Chocolate Lasagna - not Olive Garden, Chocolate Lasagna. So we decided to go there...

I loathe you Olive Garden. If it isn't selling in the South, then don't cancell it everywhere; it definitely sells here in NJ. You are a pack of hornswoggling fools...

Anonymous said...

I'm with you. I can't believe the Executives of Olive Garden would remove the best item on the menu. They should be fired for being soo stupid. It was very disappointing to leave without having the finest dessert ever.

Anonymous said...

I asked about it last time we were there. The waitress said the company that they bought the chocolate lasagna from no longer makes them.

My family and I used to visit Olive Garden about once a month. Since they removed Chocolate Lasagna from the menu we've only been back once. Olive Garden, without Chocolate Lasagna, doesn't have the appeal it used to have.

The Olive Garden has a new "occasion cake" (i.e. not free b-day cake) that our waitress told us was very similar to the chocolate lasagna. The cake debuted Feb 12 in AZ. I ordered one to go yesterday, and she was right. Not quite as good, there is only one layer, and the top has chocolate shavings instead of chunks. But still quite tasty and helps a little with the withdrawal!

Anonymous said...

I am a server in at the OG in PA and ill admitt that i was DEVISTATED when they took the chocolate lasagna off the menu. The new all occasions cake (aka buona festa cake) is 6" round, 2 layer chocolate cake with butter cream icing, still with the chocolate chunks in it, but it now has chocolate shavings on it. i believe it costs somewhere around 6.25 and its VERY worth it. i believe it tastes exactly the same.

I hadn't visited the Olive Garden since August 2006, so I was not aware they had removed it from their menu. When we were there this evening, I was completely devastated. It has been my favorite for years.

Wow, I honestly thought I was the only fanatic that could get this upset about a dessert. Chocolate Lasagna at the OLive Garden was my absolutely favorite, and like everyone else's shock, I too was appalled when I was first told by our waitress that it was gone! I can't believe it, and yea, they DID replace their dessert menu with some of the most pathetic items possible. Gelato = ice cream that you can get from any corner stand and pay half the price. Cheesecake, again another staple but very generic and not at all deserving of the standards upheld by the Chocolate Lasagna. I am not going to boycott the Olive Garden, because I still love the food...but the entire magic of a complete meal is gone. I have even attempted to find out what retailer the Olive Garden has used to purchase this cake, but the waitress simply said she "didn't know". I just can't believe it. I literally lost a piece of my epicurious life! I love this cake that much that my family all got together and bought the WHOLE CAKE from the Olive Garden, not just a piece but the entire thing. It was glorious and marvelous and all those other good things. Lol. It's my birthday soon again next month on the 28th to be official, and I am so depressed I will not get to re-experience what I had in the past. My favorite birthday cake of all time, but, I believe since it was sold as a whole cake and came in a cardboard box wrapped up when we purchased it, I am almost certain there has to be someone somewhere who still makes this cake. It's was in my quest that I actually found this forum. I will let you all know when I succeed. :)

Chocalate Lasagne is amazing; however, is everyone aware that it is 800 calories a slice? Of course, you share it so it isn't as bad as that and most of the time, you just go in and have the dessert with coffee and no meal. They should bring it back. It's your choice if you want to eat all those calories...after a meal or as your meal.

Anonymous said...

I'm totally with you!! I got that cake every year as my birthday cake and am super disappointed. To be honest with you, speaking as an Italian, the food is pretty much crap except for that wonderful dessert they yanked off the menu. A-holes.

I have been dating my boyfriend for a year now. We're both very low on cash, so we'd never been on a "proper" dinner date; nothing more fancy than Wendy's. When I did finally get a bit of cash, I promised I'd treat my beloved sugar-addict to a slice of Chocolate Lasagna. We went to Olive Garden. I shelled out $25 (of the $100 I had for the month) for a fairly mediocre meal, which took an hour to reach our table, after the half-hour wait to get in. Now, I've got a ridiculously slow metabolism, and in conjunction, an extremely low sugar-tolerance. Half a doughnut, and I'm through with sugar. I can circumvent this for something as amazing as Chocolate Lasagna. In fact, to my memory, it's the only desert I've ever bought at a restaurant (barring birthdays). I nearly cried when I realized I'd spent a quarter of my monthly paychcek on a so-so meal which couldn't be remedied with a delectable desert!

We're in the kitchen, working on making a copycat recipe right now, but I don't have high hopes. Olive Garden, I imagine you don't care that you've lost my business (seeing as I could rarely afford to dine there anyway), but I do hope you're satisfied that the only dinner date I've ever gone on was thoroughly ruined.

I am in the same boat as all of you. I was so pissed when I learned it was removed from the menu. I design cakes, and even *I* was looking forward to shelling out the cash to have the chocolate lasagna as my wedding cake one day! I've tried the copycat recipes, but it's not the same! and it's about 2x as tall! Whoever can figure out the REAL recipe, will have a long line of people begging for it.

Time to go on OG's website and complain. Good to know Im not the only one, though!

Please can someone explain why they removed the chocolate lasagna from the menu? Who removes one of the most popular items from a menu?

Do you think our emails will change thier minds and make them add the chocolate lasagne back for us? If so, I'll call everyone in my phone directory and ask them to come on over and sign also. And, I have stopped going there because of the missing dessert and a favorite main dish also. Those peolpe must have lost thier minds to take a favorite of so many off the menu.

With the economy the way it's been the last few years, I suppose I should thank Olive Garden for removing the Chocolate Lasagna from the menu. I used to go there twice per week (sometimes three times), buying a meal and my favorite desert. After they stopped carrying it, I slowed to once per month or so, figuring that whoever made this bone-headed decision would get straightened out. The staff said it was the most popular dessert and couldn't figure it out either. Well, now I've only been to Olive Garden about four times in the last three years. I figure I've saved a lot of money due to their decision, so I suppose I should thank them. Of course, they're making a LOT less money off me.

Wife and I have boycotted the restaurant ever since our beloved Chocolate Lasagna went the way of the dodo. If it returns, so will we. Until then we will continue to visit our local Italian restaurant.

Has anyone found where we can purchase this cake? I bought the whole cake from Olive Garden years ago and took to a party. I wished I would have checked out the manufacturer. Crave that desert. I won't spend hours baking a cake. It would not turn out. We don't go to Olive Garden anymore because of that. We would buy this once a wk and diet all week.

I also had written the company and received a $20.00 gift card. My husband loves their food, the only reason I allowed us to eat there was because I ordered the chocolate lasagna. That was the only reason for going. I was and still am upset that they took this off the menu. The very last time I was there I asked to speak to the manager, I asked about the chocolate lasagna. He had told me the manufacturer was no longer making it. It wasn't their choice to discontinue it.

I have made the copycat reciepes. They are just as good. I don't make them from scratch as a boxed cake with a little cherry extract is just as good. I also add a few drops of almond extract to the frosting along with the vanilla.

Does anyone know who made the cakes for the restaurant? That is who we need to contact..I crave that cake all the time.. The company would make a killing if they would sell them in stores.
